Catamarans are multi-hulled boats and are considered as luxury cruising yachts. A catamaran is a twin-hulled sailing and powered boat developed for sport and recreation in the second half of the 20th century. It is a geometry-stabilized craft, deriving its stability from its wide beam, rather than from a ballasted keel as with a monohull boat. Catamarans are widely used for day sailing, chartering-fishing, & world cruising, as boats with two hulls are growing in acceptance and appeal. The basic design maybe hundreds of years old but today's updated designs make catamarans a viable option for any sailor.
Catamarans are also used for sports and racing purposes, as well as for other applications such as military operations and passenger transport. Catamarans offer multiple advantages such as speed, enhanced stability, and maneuverability over other marine alternatives such as yachts, boats, and mono-hulls. Catamarans provide improved stability, due to high speed, support from two hulls, safety, and level sailing due to lack of heeling. Catamarans are expensive because they are high quality, easy to sail, safe, spacious, and require a lot of building material. Thus, they are highly used for luxury and leisure applications by the upper-class end user.
Catamarans are often much safer than similarly-sized monohulls offshore. Safety comes from increased motion comfort, speed, great stability, and excess buoyancy due to lack of ballast. On average, cruising catamarans can reach top speeds of 15 knots (17.3 mph or 27.84 kph). However, some cruising catamarans can reach up to 30+ knots in the right wind conditions. Rising disposable income has increased traveling and tourism activities, as well as increasing the adoption of sailing, water sports, cruising, and campaigning. Therefore, the popularity of catamarans has increased or increased at a rapid pace.
Catamarans are especially popular for sports in North America. In December 2021, SailGP selected Chicago to host the United States Sail Grand Prix at Navy Pier, in June 2022. SailGP is one of the fastest emerging properties in world sports featuring exciting, up-close action as teams race identical F50 catamarans in an annual global championship held in some of the most iconic cities around the world.
